My Move |
When I moved to Israel, I was 2 years into marriage, and I boarded the plane with 8 full-size bags and an 11 month old in tow.
We had seen our apartment only once, via video, and were told it would be deep cleaned before we arrived. After landing at 5 am, with a jet-lagged, cranky baby and swirling emotions, we trekked to Jerusalem and up the four flights of stairs to our dusty, moldy, creaky new home. Yikes doesn't even describe it. The kitchen walls were peeling, there was a hole in the ceiling, mold all over the bathroom, and crumbs on the oven. The second bedroom had a crib in a box (bought graciously by my husband's uncle and dropped off). We were missing a fridge, a washer/dryer, and bedroom furniture. My husband and I were swaying with exhaustion while our baby screamed, and we realized we had to build the crib before anything else. And it takes two to build a crib. And our baby was NOT HAVING IT when we tried to put him down. Needless to say, it was a nightmare, and many tears were shed within the first hour of living in Israel. If only we had someone in Israel who could be on top of everything BEFORE we got there, so I wouldn't have to spend the first week scrubbing the walls and the bathtub! And fixing holes, cleaning the couch and oven, and struggling to find a fridge to buy! And with my lifelong passion for obsessively organizing, Simply Settled Israel was born. Now I can put my passion for perfection to good use, and find some meaning in the traumatic beginning to our Israeli life! It is a privilege to live in Israel, and if I can make the transition easier for someone else, I'm on it! |
